Right to an Education

Students have a right to an education as long as they do not violate or interfere with the teaching/learning process of other students. This includes the rights of other students in their ability to learn and to teachers in their ability to teach. It is expected that all students will have respect for fellow students and all figures of authority at all times.

 

Authority of Staff

Students are reminded that they are partners with the teachers, principal, assistant principal and support staff. Each group has a specific role in assisting students in learning as much as they can. A major part of that roll is to direct the activities of the students into proper, positive channels. There are times, however, when some students fail to act in the best interest of all of the above groups. At these times, students are advised that the principal, any teacher, any supervisor, aide or any auxiliary staff member has the authority to direct the actions of the students at any place and time on the school property while school is in session or a school activity is in progress.

Classroom Rules

Each teacher will develop and post his/her own classroom rules appropriate to their particular grade level. Students must adhere to the classroom standards set by their teachers.

• Students are expected to respond immediately and respectfully to directions given by any authorized staff member.
• Profane language and discourteous, rude behavior will not be tolerated.
• After recess, students are to proceed immediately to their line-up area. The rest-room facilities and drinking fountains are to be used before the whistle/bell sounds.
• Students will walk to classrooms, cafeteria, gym, outside lunch areas and the library in straight, quiet lines.
• Students will enter the classrooms quietly and listen for the teacher’s direction.
• When participating in group activities, students are to speak in a quiet voice.
• Students must have permission to leave the classroom.
• Students will be responsible in the use of school materials.
• Students will be expected to keep their hands and feet to themselves at all times.
• Fighting and threatening others will not be tolerated.
• Students will not show public displays of affection, including, but not limited to, kissing and holding hands.
• Students are not allowed to bring the following items to school: permanent markers, skateboards, rollerblades, tape players, electronic games, toys, radios, walkmans, cameras, scooters, recording equipment, Pokemon or trading cards, make-up or perfume, and other personal items that do not pertain to school. Exceptions will be made only with the teacher’s permission. Parents may be responsible for retrieving confiscated items that have been deemed unacceptable.
• Students should not have any medications on their person. All medications must be dispensed at the health office, including over-the-counter medications, such as cough drops.
• Cell phones must be turned off while on school grounds and stored in backpacks.
• As a general rule, students are not allowed to bring or have the following at school: money (with the exception of lunch or special events), gum, soda pop, candy, or outside fund-raisers. Soda may be brought in a student’s lunch, but must be consumed at lunch and in the cafeteria. No food is to be eaten on the playground.
• No running in hallways or on stairs is permitted.
• The elevator is for staff use only.

Playground behavior is expected to reflect the same respect for self and others as the classroom. Recess and physical education activities are designed to give students an opportunity to refresh themselves, have opportunities to participate in large group and small group activities and to share and develop friendships outside the classroom environment.

• No food is allowed in the play yard
• Students are not allowed in hallways or inside non-grade level buildings without teacher permission
• No flips, cartwheels, etc. are allowed on the yar
• No running or playing tag in the playground equipment area is allowed.
• No jumping from slides is allowed
• On the slide, students must be sitting down, feet first.One student at a time is allowed down the slideNo backwards walking up the slide.
• No “butts up” or “suicide gangs.”
• No bats or hard balls are permitted.
• No tackle or tag football may be played.
• No play fighting is allowed.
• No climbing on gates, fences or walls is permitted.
• Drinks and bathroom breaks are to be taken before recess ends.
• Avoid shouting and screaming. Talk courteously.
• Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
• Line up immediately when asked to do so or when the bell rings.
• No sliding on icy sidewalks.
• Playground equipment is only for grades 1 – 5.
• At recess, use the outside restrooms and water fountains near the cafeteria.

Periodic assemblies are held to broaden students’ cultural experiences and to receive information important to the smooth operation of the school. Students are asked to conduct themselves in a manner that shows respect to the performers or the person in charge and toward their peers who may be interested in the subject or performance. Students acting in an inappropriate manner will receive punishment equal to their deeds. Students who misbehave will be removed from assemblies.

All students are asked to follow these rules relating to assembly behavior:

• Line up and walk quietly to the assembly.
• Wait to be seated upon arriving at the cafeteria. Sit where directed. Sit quietly, keeping your hands, feet, belongings, and comments to yourself, before, during and after the assembly.
• There will be no whistling, yelling or booing allowed.
• After the assembly, remain sitting quietly until you are directed to stand and go with your teacher.

• Enter and leave the cafeteria quietly.
• Sudents waiting in line must be quiet and orderly.
• Talk quietly and courteously.
• Remain seated until finished eating.
• Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
• ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD THROWING IS ALLOWED!
• Pick up tray and trash when finished.
• Classes will remain seated at tables for 15 minutes prior to dismissal to the playground. This is to allow students time to eat their lunch.
• Students seated at the lunch detention table shall remain there until their 35 minute lunch period has ended.
• Students will follow directives given by lunch duty staff.

The Palmdale School District believes that classrooms should be safe for students and staff. Students should be aware that they may be expelled for bringing a gun, knife or anything that looks like or can be used as a weapon to school.

NO GUNS, KNIVES, WEAPONS, OR REPLICAS OF WEAPONS OR DANGEROUS INSTRUMENTS

• In school buildings
• On school grounds
• While going to or coming from school
• During or while going to or coming from school sponsored activities
• During lunch, whether on or off campus

Students in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade possessing, exhibiting or threatening others with a weapon may be suspended or expelled pursuant to AR 5144.1

Students in grades 5th through 8th possessing, exhibiting or threatening others with a weapon shall be suspended and recommended for expulsion, pursuant to AR 5144.1
