Rules and Procedures

School Rules

Buena Vista School will provide a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. Teachers will be empowered to teach and students free to learn without the threat of physical or psychological harm. Students misbehaving and violating classroom and school rules may be referred to administration and receive appropriate consequences.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment of or by any student shall not be tolerated. The governing board considers sexual harassment to be a major offense which can result in suspension or expulsion of students. The California Education Code, Section 48900.2, prohibits the sexual harassment of all persons in the educational setting, including students. Sexual harassment may be defined as comments about one’s body, sexual remarks, jokes or innuendoes; obscene gestures; inappropriate and unwelcome touching; lifting up skirts or pulling at clothing; whistling or catcalling; cornering or blocking the victim’s passage; etc. (see Section 12.6 for full details).

Theft

Theft is the taking and removal of personal or school property with the intent to deprive its rightful owner of such property. Any act of theft should be reported to the teacher or the principal. A person who commits such an act may be subject to suspension and prosecution within the extent of the law.

Vandalism

Vandalism is the willful or malicious destruction or defacement of property or of personal effects on school property. Any act of vandalism should be immediately reported to a school authority. Any person who commits such acts is subject to suspension and/or expulsion and prosecution to the full extent of the law. Guilty parties will be requied to reimburse the district for all charges caused by the vandalism.

Alcohol/Drugs

Possession, use, sale, intent to sell, or distribution of drugs and/or alcohol or narcotics devices is prohibited in school buildings, on school grounds, on school buses and other locations under school control. Offenders may be suspended and/or expelled.

Personal Property

Students have the right to be physically safe and secure in their person and property, and to be free from unreasonable search or violation of their privacy. Students have the responsibility to avoid violating the personal and property rights of others. This carries with it the obligation to avoid damaging school grounds, buildings, equipment and property. It further means that students must refrain from any action that might inflict harm on others and should not possess any material or items which could do the same. Possession of knives or other similarly dangerous objects will result in automatic suspension and referral for expulsion from school (see section on weapons).
