Medication Administered During School Hours

MEDICATION ADMINISTERED DURING SCHOOL HOURS

The District will provide epinephrine auto-injectors to school nurses and trained personnel who may administer the epinephrine auto-injectors to provide emergency medical aid to persons suffering, or reasonably believed to be suffering from potentially life-threatening symptoms of anaphylaxis at school or a school activity. The District will also make emergency stock albuterol inhalers available to school nurses and trained personnel to be used to provide medical aid to persons suffering, or reasonably believed to be suffering, from respiratory distress.
 

CEC § 49423: Administration of Prescribed Medication.

Pupils who must take medication (prescribed and over-the-counter) at school, must submit a written statement from the CA licensed physician detailing the prescribed amount, method and time schedule. Parental signature authorizing administration of medication is also required. All medication is kept and dispensed in the school’s health office. Students will be assisted by designated school personnel. Any exceptions must be approved by the site administrator and the school nurse. All medication authorization shall be renewed at least annually. NOTE: Please contact your child’s school to obtain the appropriate authorization form(s).

CEC § 49423.1: Inhaled Asthma Medication.

Pupils may carry and self-administer inhaled asthma medication if the school receives both a written statement from the physician or surgeon detailing the name of the medication, method, amount, and time schedules by which the medication is to be taken, and confirming that the pupil is able to self-administer inhaled asthma medication, and a written statement from the parent, foster parent, or guardian of the pupil consenting to the self-administration, providing a release for the school nurse or other designated school personnel to consult with the health care provider of the pupil regarding any questions that may arise with regard to the medication, and releasing the school district and school personnel from civil liability if the self-administering pupil suffers an adverse reaction by taking medication pursuant to this section. CEC § 49423: Epinephrine Auto-injectable Medication.

Pupils requiring auto-injectable epinephrine for anaphylaxis may be assisted by a school nurse or other designated school personnel. Auto-injectable epinephrine will be kept and dispensed in the school’s health office. Exceptions must be approved by the site administrator and the school nurse, and are to be documented in the child’s individualized health care plan. In order for a pupil to carry and self-administer prescription auto-injectable epinephrine, the school district shall obtain both a written statement from the licensed physician detailing the name of the medication, method, amount, and time schedules by which the medication is to be taken, and confirming that the pupil is able to self-administer auto-injectable epinephrine, and a written statement from the parent, foster parent, or guardian of the pupil consenting to the self-administration, providing a release for the school nurse or other designated school personnel to consult with the health care provider of the pupil regarding any questions that may arise with regard to the medication, and releasing the school district and school personnel from civil liability if the self-administering pupil suffers an adverse reaction as a result of self-administering medication. A pupil may be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to Section 48900 if that pupil uses auto-injectable epinephrine in a manner other than as prescribed. CEC § 49414.5: Emergency medical services: diabetes

A pupil with diabetes, who demonstrates ability to self-test and monitor his or her blood glucose level, upon written request of the parent or guardian, and with authorization of the licensed health care provider of the pupil, will be permitted to test his or her blood glucose level and to otherwise provide diabetes self-care in the classroom, or other area of the school grounds when necessary. Appropriate care and emergency procedures must be documented in the child’s individualized health care plan, with site administrator and school nurse approval.
